142: Beyond the Target: What Is Your Nervous System Organized Around? [Beneath the Protocol Series]
Sep 16, 2026
In this episode of the Zero Disturbance Podcast, Kambria Evans explores what happens when we look beyond the traditional EMDR target and begin thinking about nervous system reorganization.
In brain-based therapy, we often focus on identifying the negative cognition, processing the traumatic memory, and installing an adaptive positive cognition.
But what happens after restoration?
What happens when a client is no longer primarily organized around survival?
This episode explores a deeper question:
What does your client's nervous system want to become organized around next?
Kambria examines how EMDR, IFS, ART, attachment theory, polyvagal theory, predictive processing, and other brain-based therapy frameworks all point toward a nervous system designed to protect and preserve the person.
But survival isn't necessarily the ultimate goal of a human life.
Through the Zero Disturbance Systems Method, Kambria introduces a distinction between restoration cognitions and expansion organizing principles.
Restoration might sound like:
- "I'm safe."
- "I have choices."
- "I'm enough."
- "I can protect myself."
- "I can handle this."
These are incredibly important.
But expansion asks a different question:
- How do I want to live?
- What do I want to organize my life around?
- What matters to me now?
- What becomes possible when survival is no longer running the show?
The episode explores how therapy can move from simply reducing disturbance toward systems reorganization, intentional authorship, identity development, connection, curiosity, creativity, meaning, and purpose.
For EMDR therapists and other brain-based clinicians, this offers a new way to think about treatment beyond simply asking whether a target has been successfully processed.
In this episode, you'll explore:
- Why so many brain-based therapies begin with the premise of self-preservation
- How trauma can change the organizing question of the nervous system
- Why the memory may be a portal into a larger predictive network
- The limitations of viewing EMDR solely through negative and positive cognitions
- The difference between restoration and expansion
- How the nervous system can become organized around values rather than fear
- What happens after trauma symptoms begin to resolve
- How the Zero Disturbance Systems Method expands traditional case conceptualization
- Why the deepest question in therapy may ultimately be: "What do you want your life to be organized around?"
