The importance of taking breaks from our feelingsOct 02, 2021
As EMDR therapists, we know that we never want to overwhelm our clients with feeling too much or too fast when it comes to trauma. Less is often more when creating safety. We know this because we are taught to spend time in Phase 2 with resourcing and preparation before going into trauma networks. And when we do go into Phase 4, we know to keep clients in their window of tolerance. And, if they leave that WOT space, we bring them back so they can process the trauma effectively.
As people living through an almost 2-year pandemic, we know that we have been and remain firehosed by trauma. And we are often not in our window of tolerance. And taking breaks from trauma (and the painful feelings that go with it) is responsible and wise as we live to survive.
In today's video, we discuss why right now is not the time to encourage people to feel all their feelings, and why we should be encouraging breaks from feeling painful feelings during COVID.
